Indenture of 8 May 1834 between Jacob Hittle & wife Rachel; & Chas. Shackelford & John Warner, Trustees; all of Rappahannock Co., VA. Conveyance of tract of land upon which said Jacob now resides in Rappahannock Co., VA, adjoining lands of Absalom Jordan, Vincent Corder & John Haddox, bounded on North by the River, lying about 2 miles north of Flint Hill. Hittle to continue occupying & operating property during his lifetime. At Hittle’s death to be use of Trustees for one month, thereafter as designated in Hittle’s will. Certified 8 May 1834 for Trustees, 6 June 1835 for Hittle’s; filed 13 June 1835; all at Rappahannock Co., VA. (Deeds B:194, Rappahannock Co., VA)


Indenture 14 Mar 1834 between John McFarlin & wife Nancy, and John Haddock, all of Rappahannock Co., VA. McFarlan's sell for $65 a parcel of land in Rappahannock Co., VA, being a part of land taken up by Charles Shackelford & James Green, Jr. & conveyed by deed to McFarlan. Begins at white walnut on south side of Hasty's River, thence S.6.E.36 poles to 3 Butterwood trees on north side of Turners Mountain; thence due west 88.8 poles to small Chesnut oak & Chesnut on north side of said mountain; thence N.6.W.40 poles to small Locust & large Chesnut oak near bank of River; thence with the River to beginning, containing 20 acres. John Haddox taxed for 121 acres in Fee in Rappahannock Co., 28 miles northwest of Court House, on Chester Road, adjacent to A. Jordan. (Land Tax Book :16, 1834)

Indenture 26 June 1835 between John Warner & wife Malinda; & John Haddocks, all of Rappahannock Co., VA. Warners sell for $1000 a tract of land in Rappahannock Co., VA adjoining those of Moses Gibson, said John Haddocks & others, containing 62½ acres. Description: begin at 2 locusts & a sycamore on the River; thence S.7.W 99 poles to stone in Haddocks’ line; thence N.83.W 126 poles to stone in Updikes’ line; thence N.7.E 60 poles to white oak & chesnut on River; thence with River to beginning. Part of tract previously owned by Elijah Houghton dec’d. & conveyed to said Warner by Alexander F. Menafee, Commissioner of Court. Certified by County Magistrates on 26 June 1835, recorded 29 July 1835. (Deeds B:221, Rappahannock Co., VA)


John Dukes Seaborn of Franklin Co., OH sold to John Hadox [sic] Sen. of Frederick Co., VA for $100 on 10 Sept 1813 in fee simple a 120 acre parcel of land in Culpeper Co., Va, now in occupancy of Joseph Settle, adjoining land of William Roundtree, being same land leased to by Peter Locke to Thomas Jordan for 99 years, now the aforesaid John Dukes Seaborn the legal heir of his father John Dukes. Witnessed by E. Haddox, Charles Grubs & Mansfield Settle, proved on 5 May 1817. The Title Bond, being of record in the County Court of Frederick, was recorded with certificates in the County Court of Rappahannock, VA on 12 April 1936. . Reference note in column states "J.R. Haddox". (Deeds B:404, Rappahannock Co., VA)   (NOTE: This piece of property is desribed and identified as "Locust Grove" in a W.P.A. Historical Inventory researched by Margaret E. John Haddox taxed for 4 pieces of property, all in Rappahannock Co.:

- 121 acres on Chester Road, 28 miles northwest of Court House, adjacent to A. Jordan.

- 20 acres on Hasty's River, 10 miles North of Court House, bought of Jno. McFarland.

- 62 1/2 acres, 7 miles NE of Court House, adjacent to Gibson.

- 120 acres, 7 miles NE of Court House, adjacent to G. Settle. (Land Tax Book, 1836)


Indenture (Deed of Trust) on 15 Sept 1836 between Asa Updike & wife Ruthe, John Eastham & John R. Haddox, and John Warner – all of Rappahannock Co., VA. Updikes, in order to secure $3500 with interest from 25 Dec 1836, payable to Warner in silver or gold before 25 Dec 1841, with interest paid annually in silver or gold, convey to Eastham & Haddox a tract of land in Rappahannock Co., VA, the same as conveyed to Updike by Deed from Warner dated 15 Sept 1836, containing 314 acres, including mill and its machinery, in the event that Updike should default on payment of the debt. Terms of forfeiture & sale included. Signed by Asa & Ruth Updike, and John R. Haddox, certified & filed at Rappahannock Co. Court on 16 Sept 1836. Deeds (B:462, Rappahannock Co., VA)


Indenture of Bargain and Sale made & entered 15 May 1839 between Minor Gibson & wife Elizabeth, & John R. Haddox, all of Rappahannock Co., VA. For $60 Gibsons convey to Haddox a parcel of land in Rappahannock Co., VA: beginning at 2 small persimmons on east side of Spruce pine River; thence S.53 3/4.E.36 poles to chesnut oak on North side of mountain; thence S.36.W.44.5 poles to spanish oak & 2 chesnut oaks; thence N.53 3/4.W.36 poles to a stone on said river; thence with river to beginning, containing about 10 acres. Indenture of Bargain & Sale made 26 Aug 1842 between Lawson Eastham & wife Ann, & John R. Haddox, all of Rappahannock Co., VA. For $176 Eastham sells Haddox a parcel of land in Rappahannock Co., VA, being part of land purchased by Eastham from Gordon(?) H. Brown, Horatio G. Moffett & William Green, Commissioners appointed by order of Rappahannock Co. Court at April Term 1842 in a suit between Iagniton(?) P. Lyles, plaintiff & Moses Gibson in his own right & as late executor of Moses Gibson dec’d. Parcel begins at a stone on road leading around Bastard mountain; thence S.26.E.107 poles to spanish oak & poplar; thence N.75.W.56 poles to 3 small chesnuts; thence N.18.W.61 poles to hickory & maple on said road; thence to same road near the beginning, containing about 20 acres. Indenture of bargain & sale made 15 Mar 1845 between Samuel McDougle & wife Mary B. of Warren Co., VA, & John R. Haddox of Rappahannock Co., VA. For $698.06 Haddox purchases a tract of land in Rappahannock Co., VA: beginning at stone on original corner to Updikes; thence S.52 ½.W.14 poles to large chesnut; thence S.38 ¼.W.40.4 poles, S.24.W.18 poles, S.44.W.27 poles, S.87 ½.W 28 poles, N.56 ¼.W.20 poles being the bearing of the road to Beavers Mill, S.72 ¼.W.12 poles to oak in Larty(?) Masons yard; thence N.10.E.92 ½ poles to stone; thence S.80.E 103 poles to stone corner to Mrs. B.W. Gibson; thence S.10.W.3 ½ poles to beginning, containing 46 acres, 2 rods & 15 poles. Indenture of bargain & sale made & entered 18 Sept 1846 between William Triplett formerly of Warren Co., VA, & John R. Haddox of Rappahannock Co., VA. For $10 a tract in Rappahannock Co., VA of 120 acres, same tract where Thomas H. Settle & his mother reside under a lease executed by his grandfather Thomas Jordan by Presley Thornton, which now belongs to legal representatives of John Haddox dec’d. Interest intended for conveyance is ¼ of 1/7 part. Certified 18 Sept 1846 and filed 20 April 1847 in Rappahannock Co., VA. (Deeds G:145, Rappahannock Co., VA).


Indenture of bargain & sale made & entered 8 May 1847 between Middleton Jordan & wife Martha, late of Warren Co., VA, & John R. Haddox of Rappahannock Co., VA. For $10 Haddox purchases parcel of land in Rappahannock Co., VA containing 120 acres, where Thomas H. Settle now resides under a lease yet to run 18 to 20 years. Interest intended for conveyance is ¼ of 1/7 part. Signed & certified 8 May 1847, recorded 13 March 1848 in Rappahannock Co., VA. (Deeds G:347, Rappahannock Co., VA)


Indenture of bargain & sale made & entered 7 Aug 1847 between John Jett & John R. Haddox, both of Rappahannock Co., VA. For $900 Jett sells Haddox tract of land in Rappahannock Co., VA purchased by Jett at trust sale of John Finnell on 8 April 1847. Beginning at black oak, 2 spanish oaks & small chesnut formerly a maple & poplar on original corner to Martha Compton & Job English near bank of river; thence S.43 ½.W 53.3 poles to locust, small poplar & ash & elm on west side of river corner to Stephen Compton: Gibson land; thence N 72 ½.W.123.7 poles to stone in said Comptons line; thence N.43 ½.E 105.8 poles to stone in John Updike’s line; thence S.57 ¾.E. 73 ½ poles to forked Spanish oak corner to said Updike in a flats; thence S.48 ¾.E. 41.4 poles to beginning, containing about 60 acres. Deposition of John R. Haddox was taken by Addison Turner at the village of Flint Hill, Rappahannock County on 3 Aug 1834, in action before the Chancery Court of Culpeper County of Absalom House vs. Thomas House. Haddox testified that he did recall a joint bond given to him by the plaintiff and the defendant, dated about 1 May 1828. The signature of John Haddox differs in handwriting with the rest of the document. John R. Haddox Will.
- I John R. Haddox of the county of Rappahannock and State of Virginia do make this my last will and testament in manner & form following.
- First. I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Linny Haddox the whole of my estate both real and personal (after the payment of all my just debts) during her widow hood or until my youngest child John Haddox shall arrive to the age of twenty one years, during which time she shall provide for the support and education of my daughter Julian Haddox and my son John Haddox. -- It is also my will and desire that my son Clinton B. Haddox remain with his mother and superintend the management of my estate for her and that he secure for his services as long as he thinks proper he remain, one third part of the profits of my estate he paying one third part of the expenses of educating my son John Haddox.
- Secondly -- I give to my beloved wife Linny Haddox the privilege of making such assurances to my daughter Julian Haddox should she marry before she arrives to the age of Twenty one years as she may think convenient, charging my said daughter with such assurance. The like privilege I give to her for the benefit of my son Clinton B. Haddox.
- Thirdly -- As soon as my son John Haddox arrives to the age of twenty one years it is my will and desire that the whole of my estate, real, personal, and mixed, be divided into four equal parts, one part of which I give and bequeath to my son Clinton B. Haddox and to his heirs forever - one other part I give and bequeath to my daughter Julian Haddox and to her heirs forever, one other part I give and bequeath to my son John Haddox and to his heirs forever - the other fourth part I give to my beloved wife Linny Haddox during her natural life, and at her death the same to be equally divided among my children then living and their descendants according to the statute of disloralations(??) -- But if my wife Linny Haddox should die before my son John Haddox arrives to the age of twenty one years it is my will and desire that the whole of my estate real, personal, and mixed be equally divided immediately thereafter among my three children herein before named.
- Fourthly and lastly - I hereby constitute and appoint my beloved wife Linny Haddox my executrix to this my last will and testament, and desire that she be not required to enter into bond and security here to for the same until complaint be made to the county courts of Rappahannock by my son Clinton B. Haddox or some one of my children that she is likely to waste my estate after which if the court be satisfied that the complaint be well founded, it is my will & desire that she be required to give bond and security as the Law directs, and in the event that she refuse or be unable to do the same it is also my will and desire that m son Clinton B. Haddox be appointed executor & that he be required to give bond & security according to Law; hereby revoking all former or other wills by me made. In testimony whereof I have herein to set my hand and seal this 16th day of April 1849.

In Rappahannock County Court 14th of May 1849.
- This last will and testament of John R. Haddox decd. was this day produced to the court proved by the oaths of A. Turner & Robert Jordan, two of the subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded. And on the motion of Linny G. Haddox the Executrix therein named, who made oath and entered into bond in the penalty of $10,000 conditioned as the Law directs without security the testator having directed in his said will, that his Executrix therein named should be obliged to give security, and he having left visible estate sufficient to pay his debts certification is granted her for obtaining a probate of the said will, in due form.
